Stephen Hawking, a man behind many ground-breaking discoveries, passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 in Cambridge, England.

Hawking passed on peacefully in the comfort of his home.

“We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today,” said Hawking’s children in a statement, “He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years.”

Hawking is one of the key contributors to the scientific developments in cosmology, general relativity, and quantum gravity; today, a scientific theory which states that black holes emit radiation is referred to as “Hawking radiation”.

“A Brief History of Time” is Hawking’s literary gift to humanity. In the book, Hawking discusses the universe and its origin and fate in a non-technical tone which allows for a wide accessibility to scientific discussions and interests for a great amount of people outside of science fields.

Hawking has also made television appearances on popular shows such as “The Simpsons” and “The Big Bang Theory”. “The Theory of Everything”, a 2014 film about 21-year-old Hawking and the discovery of his motor neuron disease in the midst of his romantic relationship with Jane Wilde, received great acclaim from critics and audience.

Hawking’s discoveries and contributions to both science and our culture will continue to be praised by the modern society and the future generation.

“My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all.” –Stephen Hawking-
